Camping on the magical volcano Telica
N icaragua is the land of volcanoes. 19 active volcanoes with fiery lava, breathtakingly beautiful cloud forests and a diverse biodiversity characterize the landscape in the west of the country.
Most tourists who travel to Nicaragua visit the college town of Leon and from there make a side trip to the Cerro Negro (Black Hill), an active volcano less then one hour away to expierience the famous Volcano Boarding. In the early 2000s, someone had the idea to try and slide down the volcano – on a mattress and after a while it became a trend (Dirty Volcano Boarding). Anyhow in my opinion its not that spectacular. A whole nother level was the experience to spend a night camping on the vocano Telica. The Telica is, with 2000 years, one of the oldest volcanoes of Nicaragua and is 1061 meters high. There are two craters: a small shallow one, which doesn’t attract attention, and the second deep crater, which likes to show its power. This 121 meters deep crater, which is constantly 500°C hot inside, had erupted the last time in 2016, when it erupted 60 times, within five months. When you arrive there you can easily go to the edge of the crater. But the whole scenery is just magic.
After exploring the crater we admired the views, saw an incredible sunset and started to set up the tents. (Due to the sulfur, it is important not to camp directly at the crater.) During the night we ate some Burritos and had good talks at the bondfire. When we woke up we saw that even some wild horses had joined us. magical!
Sometimes I feel like a person living on the brink of a volcano.

If you decide to camp on the volcano it is extremely important to bring enough water and food, as there is no running water on site. Also, a flashlight is very helpful and if you have one, a camping stove. If you are an experienced hiker, you can make the tour to the crater on your own. There is the possibility to hike from Santa Teresa or from San Jacinto (both tracks are available on the app MAPS.ME). However, I would recommend you to do the tour with a group, because it is more fun and you don’t have to hike that much. Enjoy !
